Patients who benefit from palliative care early often benefit from hospice later as well.

Hospice care can be provided in a variety of settings. Home hospice is the most common — allowing patients to receive care at home in familiar surroundings. Hospice care is also provided in nursing homes, long-term care facilities, inpatient hospice facilities, and dedicated hospice care facilities. Inpatient hospice care is available for short-term inpatient needs when symptoms require a higher level of care than can be managed at home. The right setting depends entirely on the patient's care needs and the family's circumstances.

Medicare covers hospice services for patients who are eligible for hospice under Medicare Part A.
